The Queensland government has recently commenced a trial initiative, the “Solar for Rentals.” This initiative is designed for landlords in Townsville and offers rebates of up to $3,500. Greenfield Energy is one of a handful of suppliers approved to install solar systems as part of this initiative. The Solar for Rentals initiative is part of the QLD government’s “Affordable Energy Plan” and is provided per rental property not per landlord. Therefore, the more qualified properties you have, the more times you can access these rebates.
Rebates range based on the size of the installation as measured by panel or inverter capacity. To illustrate, a rebate is issued to the amount of$2,500 for systems 3 kilowatts to less than 4 kilowatts, $3,000 for systems 4 kilowatts to less than 5 kilowatts, and, $3,500 for systems 5 kilowatts or greater. Obviously, the greater the solar installation size, the bigger the rebate.
The benefits for you as an eligible landlord is that most of the up-front installation cost will be covered. It also adds value to your property and opens up the opportunity for you to command a higher rental income. Your tenant will have access to solar without an upfront cost and can reduce their power bills in exchange for a rent increase.
Your rental property must have its own roof space and electric meter and is tenanted with a rent of $350 or less per week. The solar systems must be new, be installed by an approved supplier (that’s us) and with a minimum of 3kW in size.
